Tieflings in D&D have a unique naming tradition unlike any other race — they can choose between two completely different naming systems, each reflecting a different aspect of their identity.

The Two Tiefling Naming Traditions

Tieflings in D&D 5e have two distinct options for naming their characters: infernal names inherited from their ancestry, or virtue names they choose for themselves. Understanding both systems helps you create a tiefling name that fits your character concept.

Infernal Names

Infernal names come from the language of the Nine Hells and reflect the tiefling's connection to their diabolical ancestry. These names sound exotic and often harsh to non-tiefling ears.

Which Should You Choose?

Your choice between an infernal name and a virtue name reveals something about your tiefling character before you even begin playing. An infernal name suggests a tiefling who accepts or is indifferent to their heritage. A virtue name suggests one who actively wants to define themselves on their own terms.

Some players choose a virtue name that is deeply ironic — a tiefling who causes destruction named "Serenity," or a ruthless assassin named "Mercy." This contrast can be a rich source of roleplay and character depth.
